Understanding Water Purity Levels

In scientific and regulated environments, the quality of water used can significantly impact the accuracy of experiments, the reliability of results, and compliance with stringent standards. But what are the options?

Laboratory water is categorised based on its purity, with classifications such as Type I, II, and III:

Type I (Ultrapure Water)

 Required for highly sensitive applications such as HPLC, ICP-MS, and molecular biology. It has a resistivity of 18.2 MΩ·cm and TOC <10 ppb, ensuring minimal interference in analytical results.

Type II (Pure Water)

Suitable for general laboratory applications, including buffer preparation and feeding autoclaves. It has a resistivity of ≥1 MΩ·cm and a TOC content of less than 50 ppb.

Type III (RO Water)

Typically produced by reverse osmosis, this water is used for non-critical applications like glassware rinsing and feeding water baths.
